E3 2010: Preview Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Fate of Two Worlds

Fans of the hectic gameplay and nerdgasm inducing cast of characters that the Marvel vs. Capcom series is known for will feel right at home with the third installment -- and then some.

When I first saw the debut trailer for the game, the one thing that struck me immediately were the graphics. The mix between the cel-shaded style of Super Street Fighter IV and the stencil-like comic book feel really brought the game to life; it gave it its own personality. Finally being able to see it in person on the show floor I can confirm without a doubt that Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has some of, if not the most impressive graphics I have seen thus far this generation. Normally, I would not spend so much time explaining the visual fidelity of a game, but there is really nothing that can compare to the beautiful palette that MvC3 delivers.

The same basic mechanics of the previous Marvel vs. Capcom games are completely intact here, and though some may still find them a bit complex, the fighting system has become less dependent on combo memorization and is focused more on creating a complimentary set of incredible characters to beat your opponents to a pulp with. The new special attacks for each character are also loads of fun to pull off, and are appropriately cinematic. That said, from the couple minutes of gameplay I was able to get with the title, characters feel balanced, and new additions to the roster like Deadpool and Dante play fantastically. An updated list of playable characters announced (and "discovered") thus far can be found here.

After playing the demo at Sony's booth I am anxiously awaiting the tentative March 2011 release of MvC3 and you should be too!
